A Family Legacy of Breeding Excellence

Glenville: A Name Rooted in South Australian Agriculture
Founded in 1938 by Merv Smith, Glenville began as a response to the growing local demand for Merino rams. His son Barry came home at an early age and took on the main responsibility for the Glenville Stud. He devoted his life to continually improving and growing the stud until his passing in 2024. The property has evolved into a specialised Poll Merino stud and cereal cropping enterprise, now proudly managed by Daryl and Carla Smith, along with their son Klay and his partner Ashlee.

We’re located in the heart of the Eyre Peninsula, on a diverse landscape that ranges from high-rainfall clay soils to sandy, low-rainfall paddocks. Our sheep are bred to thrive in these variable conditions — giving our clients peace of mind that Glenville rams will perform wherever they go.

What Sets Glenville Apart

  • Data-driven breeding combining ASBVs and visual assessment

  • 100% individually mothered lambs for over 50 years

  • Single-sire mating for pedigree accuracy

  • Non-mulesed sires to align with ethical and market expectations

  • Annual Artificial Insemination (AI) program to accelerate genetic progress

Sustainability & Profitability in Every Ram

Our breeding philosophy is simple: sustainable, easy-care sheep that reduce input costs and maintain profitability even in tough seasons. We know the challenges sheep producers face because we live them too — and that’s exactly why we breed for resilience, reliability, and return on investment.

Supporting the Future of Agriculture

Glenville is proud to support the next generation through our long-standing involvement with the Sims Farm program since 1975 at Cleve Area School. Each year, we supply rams to the school's agricultural students and provide hands-on mentoring in ram selection and ewe hogget classing to prepare them to compete in The School Merino Wether Challenge.

Providing opportunities in Agriculture is important to us, and as a result we have proudly supported 4 Cleve Area School students through their school-based apprenticeships.

Meet the Stud Principals

Daryl and Klay Smith lead the day-to-day operations of the Glenville stud. Together, they bring decades of hands-on experience in sheep and cropping production, combining practical, paddock-based knowledge with forward-thinking breeding strategies. With a deep respect for the land and a passion for genetics, they’ve continued to evolve Glenville’s offering while staying true to the values the stud was built on.
